A space to think out loud.

A counsellor who has been where you are.

For a long time, I was the person who kept everything moving. Senior director, big job, constant travel, and somewhere along the way it became the expectation that I would keep the rest of life running smoothly alongside it too. I know what that exhaustion feels like, the kind that does not shift after a good night's sleep, the tiredness that comes from being relied upon by everyone and really known by almost no one.

I do not show up with a script. Chatty, energetic, loyal and not the blank-faced nodding type.

What I Help With

Whatever’s brought you here, let’s start there.

I work with individuals and couples across a range of areas. Some people arrive knowing exactly what they want to talk about. Others know only that something is not right. Both are a perfectly good place to start.

01

Couples Counselling

Relationships do not break overnight. They drift. I work with couples using Emotionally Focused Therapy, including those working through the aftermath of an affair or choosing to separate well.

02

Burnout & Midlife Transition

You have worked hard, delivered and kept going, and now something has shifted. Maybe the drive has gone. Maybe you are functioning but empty. Burnout does not always arrive dramatically. I have lived that. I work with people who are quietly struggling inside a life that looks successful from the outside.

03

Grief & Loss

Grief does not follow rules, and it does not keep a schedule. It shows up in the middle of ordinary days. Whether your loss is recent or something you have carried quietly for years, there is no pressure here to be further along than you are.

04

Redundancy & Career Identity

Losing a senior role hits identity, status, self-worth and security all at once. I have been made redundant and I know what it feels like. This is a space where you do not have to pretend otherwise.

05

Menopause

Menopause is not just physical. For many people it arrives alongside a loss of confidence that is hard to explain when nothing dramatic has happened. I am at that stage of life myself and understand from the inside how disorienting it can be.

06

Blended Family & More

Domestic abuse, blended family life, anxiety, low mood. You do not need a dramatic event to seek support. The things that are hard to name are worth bringing too.

The First Step

The first conversation is free.

No paperwork. No commitment. Just a 20-minute call to see whether working together feels right. If you are wondering whether this is for you, let us just talk.

About Debi

For a long time, I was the person who kept everything moving. Senior director, big job, constant travel, and somewhere along the way it became the expectation that I would keep the rest of life running smoothly alongside it too. Work did not stop when I walked through the door at home, and home did not stop when I walked back out in the morning.

That kind of tired does not show up on a CV. Nobody around me at the time really saw it, because from the outside everything looked like it was going fine. I led large teams, managed redundancies, and then one day I was made redundant myself. It hit me harder than I expected, and if I am honest, it was one of the things that set me on this path.

I also have personal experience of navigating significant difficulty behind a functioning exterior, carrying something serious through a full-time senior career while keeping it together on the outside. I am telling you this not for sympathy, but because if you are sitting in a similar place right now, I want you to know that I understand it from the inside and not just from a textbook.

It was during Covid, when I started volunteering with Samaritans, that something shifted. I went in thinking I had something to give and came out understanding how much I had to learn, and how much this work mattered to me. I have since volunteered with The Blue Door, Cruse Bereavement Care and Mind. I retrained, and somewhere in that process I stopped mistaking a full diary for a good life.

I still take occasional consultancy work in supply chain and strategy, not because I have not committed to counselling, but because I think there is something honest about still being part of the world my clients are navigating. I am not standing outside it telling you what to do. I am in it too.

I read a lot. I swim. I have been known to turn up to something like hammock yoga just to see what it is. I stopped pressuring myself to project a particular image a while ago and I have not missed it. I am part of a blended family, which means that territory is not something I have studied but something I live, with all the complexity that comes with it.

You do not need to have it figured out before you reach out.

You do not need the right words.

You just need to want things to be different. I work with adults aged 18 and over. Most of what is listed below I have trained in specifically or lived through, and usually both.

01

Couples Counselling

Relationships do not break overnight. They drift. Things go unsaid, small patterns form that neither person fully chose, and before long the distance feels normal. I work with couples who want to understand each other better, communicate more honestly and find their way back to each other before things become harder to unpick.

I use Emotionally Focused Therapy in my couples work. Developed by Dr Sue Johnson, EFT works with the patterns underneath relationship difficulty, the attachment needs, the fears and the cycles that keep couples stuck. It is one of the most well-researched approaches to couples therapy available.

This includes couples working through the aftermath of an affair, and couples who have decided to separate, sometimes called conscious uncoupling. This is not legal or financial advice. It is a space to actually say what needs saying, be heard, and find some closure and understanding as the relationship ends, rather than the ending itself becoming another wound.

02

Burnout & Midlife Transition

You have worked hard, delivered and kept going, and now something has shifted. Maybe the drive has gone. Maybe you are functioning but empty. Maybe you have started wondering what the point of all of it is.

Burnout does not always arrive dramatically. Often it is a slow erosion of energy, meaning and the version of yourself you thought you knew. I have lived that. I work with people who are quietly struggling inside a life that looks successful from the outside, and with anyone at midlife who knows something needs to change but has not yet found the language for what.

03

Menopause

Menopause is not just physical. For many people it arrives alongside a loss of confidence that’s hard to explain when nothing dramatic has happened. I am at that stage of life myself and I understand from the inside how disorienting it can be, particularly for those who have spent years being capable, in control and on top of things.

If menopause is affecting your relationships, your sense of self, your work or your mental health and you want a space to talk about all of it without being handed a leaflet, I would welcome that conversation.

04

Redundancy & Career Identity

Losing a job, especially a senior one that has defined you, is a particular kind of loss that the world tends to underestimate. It hits identity, status, self-worth and security all at once. People around you may not understand why you are struggling when from the outside it looks like an opportunity.

I have been made redundant and I know what it feels like. This is a space where you do not have to pretend otherwise.

05

Grief & Loss

Grief does not follow rules, and it does not keep a schedule. It shows up in the middle of ordinary days, in the things people say trying to be kind, in the anniversaries nobody else remembers. Whether your loss is recent or something you have carried quietly for years, there is no pressure here to be further along than you are.

I also have experience working with people bereaved by suicide, a particular kind of loss that carries its own complexity and often a silence that makes it harder to grieve.

06

Domestic Abuse & Sexual Violence

I bring both professional experience through my voluntary work with The Blue Door and Samaritans, and personal understanding to this area.

If you are wondering whether counselling might help and are not sure where to start, just get in touch. You do not need to have it figured out before you reach out.

07

Blended Family & Relationship Complexity

Stepfamilies, co-parenting, the push and pull of building a new family alongside an existing one. This is territory that gets very little airtime but causes a great deal of quiet pain. I live this. I work with individuals and couples navigating the specific pressures of blended family life, with all the guilt, loyalty and love that comes with it.

08

Anxiety, Low Mood & the Hard to Name

You do not need a dramatic event to seek support. Sometimes it is the fears you have not said out loud. The pressure to be perfect that nobody asked you to carry but you carry anyway. The hidden things. The sense that you should be managing better than this.

That’s enough of a reason.

Not sure whether any of this is you? Get in touch. The first conversation is free and there is no commitment beyond that call.

If you decide to go ahead, I will send you a short client agreement and we will arrange your first session. Nothing starts until you are happy with how it works.

Between Sessions

I am not available for therapeutic support between sessions. If you need to contact me to rearrange or cancel an appointment, please use email or phone and keep contact to practical matters only.

I will not follow, connect with or respond to clients on personal social media platforms. This protects the therapeutic relationship and your confidentiality.

If we happen to see each other in public I will not acknowledge you unless you acknowledge me first. This protects your confidentiality. You are not obliged to acknowledge me and I will not be offended if you do not.

While gifts are kindly meant, I cannot accept them in line with professional guidelines. If you wish to express appreciation, a review on a professional directory is always welcome.

Corporate & Workplace

This is counselling. Not coaching.

I want to be straightforward about that, because it matters.

I have been that person. Senior director across multiple sectors, constant travel, the one everyone looked to. I know the weight of that and I know how quietly and gradually things can come apart. I also know how rarely the people around you in that environment are the right ones to talk to about it.

I still take occasional consultancy work in supply chain and strategy. I am not standing outside your world looking in. I understand the culture, the pressure and the language because I am still in it.

I work with
  • Executives and senior professionals experiencing burnout, redundancy or transition
  • Individuals carrying something they cannot talk about at work or at home
  • Organisations looking to offer genuine therapeutic support as part of staff wellbeing
  • HR teams seeking a trusted referral partner for confidential employee support
  • Businesses connected to Blue Light Card and other workplace wellbeing schemes

Civil & Workplace Mediation

Alongside counselling I hold a qualification in civil and workplace mediation. This is not family mediation. If your organisation is dealing with conflict that sits below the threshold of formal HR action, or between individuals who need a structured and confidential route forward, please get in touch directly to discuss.

Rates for corporate work are agreed directly. Get in touch and we will have a straightforward conversation about what works.

What Data We Collect

For clients and prospective clients we collect: contact information, enquiry details, date of birth, GP name and surgery, emergency contact details, health and mental health information shared in counselling, session notes and clinical records, appointment and booking details, payment and invoicing records, and all communications between you and Debra Bell by email, phone, text message or WhatsApp. All communications form part of your client record, whichever route is used.

If you use the contact form or booking system on our website we collect your name, email address, phone number, and the content of your message. Our website uses cookies, explained in our Cookie Policy. The online booking form is provided by Zanda Health, which may set its own cookies.

How We Use Your Data

To provide counselling services and manage the therapeutic relationship, to communicate about appointments and invoices including automatic reminders, to keep clinical records as required by professional standards, to ensure the safety of you and others including safeguarding obligations, to comply with legal and professional obligations, to process payments, and to respond to enquiries, concerns and complaints.

Legal Basis for Processing

Contract (providing counselling, arranging appointments, taking payment), legitimate interests (managing the practice, keeping clinical records, professional supervision, meeting professional body standards, responding to enquiries), legal obligation (safeguarding, disclosures required by law, financial records), vital interests (where necessary to protect life), and consent (only where we ask for it specifically, for example before publishing a testimonial or entering identifiable information into an AI tool).

Special category health data is processed under Article 9(2)(h) UK GDPR and Schedule 1, Part 1, paragraph 2 of the Data Protection Act 2018. Where information is shared to protect a child or adult at risk, we rely on Schedule 1, Part 2, paragraph 18 of that Act.

Confidentiality and Who We Share Your Data With

Your data is confidential. We do not sell or share your personal data for marketing purposes. We may share in the following limited circumstances: with our clinical supervisor (Joy Wanless) in professional supervision; with your GP, emergency services or statutory authorities where there is a serious risk of harm; where there is a safeguarding concern about a child or adult at risk; where required by law or court order; to prevent or help detect a serious crime; with third-party service providers including Zanda Health (practice management, records, booking, reminders and video, under a data processing agreement) and Stripe (payment processing); with our practice manager, who has limited access to the appointment calendar only and is bound by a confidentiality agreement; with a nominated professional executor who would contact you only if Debra Bell became seriously ill, unable to work or died; and with our insurer, legal advisers or BACP where needed to respond to a complaint.

Wherever possible Debra Bell will talk to you before sharing information about you.

Couples Counselling

A shared record is kept for each couple. Each partner may ask for a copy of their own information. Information about the other partner will not be released without that partner's consent, unless the law requires it.

Use of Artificial Intelligence

Information is anonymised before any AI tool is used, so nothing that could identify you is entered into an AI tool. Identifiable information would only ever be entered into an AI tool with your informed consent given in advance. AI is not used to make decisions about you or your therapy. We do not use automated decision-making or profiling.

Data Retention

Client records: seven years after the end of therapy. Prospective client records who did not proceed: six months. Financial records: six years (HMRC). Complaint records: seven years after the complaint is closed. Records are then securely and permanently destroyed.

How We Store Your Data

Client records are stored using Zanda Health (GDPR-compliant, ISO 27001-certified). All data is encrypted in transit and at rest. Paper records are in a locked cabinet. Email is via a secure business account. The phone and computer used for the practice are password protected. If a data breach is likely to put your rights at risk, we will tell you promptly and report to the ICO within 72 hours where required.

Your Rights

Under UK GDPR you have the right of access, rectification, erasure, restriction, data portability, the right to object, and the right to withdraw consent where it was given. Contact Debra Bell at contact@debell.co.uk to exercise any right. We will respond within one calendar month. Some rights are limited in the context of health records and we will explain any limitations.

Questions People Usually Ask

Before you reach out.

Do you offer online counselling?

Yes. Sessions are available online or in person at Cottingham, East Yorkshire, both at the same rate. Choose whichever works best for you.

What is the space in Cottingham like?

A dedicated professional counselling room at 142 Hallgate, Cottingham, HU16 4BD, calm and private, with free parking nearby.

What happens in the free 20-minute consultation?

A short telephone call to talk through what is going on, ask any questions, and get a sense of whether working together feels right. No paperwork, no commitment.

How much does counselling cost?

Individual sessions are £60 (60 min) or £90 (90 min). Couples sessions are £80 (60 min) or £110 (90 min). A reduced rate is available for those on low incomes, just mention it when you get in touch.

Do your fees change?

Fees are reviewed in January and then every three months. If your fee is going to change you will get at least four weeks notice.

Do you work with couples and individuals?

Yes, both. Couples work uses Emotionally Focused Therapy. Individual work covers a wide range, from burnout and redundancy to grief, menopause, anxiety and blended family life.

Who do you work with?

Adults aged 18 and over. Most clients are in the UK. If you are a UK national living abroad, get in touch. I can often work with you online once I have checked the rules for the country you are in.

What is EFCT?

Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy, developed by Dr Sue Johnson. It works with the attachment needs and patterns underneath relationship difficulty, rather than just the surface argument.

Do you work with couples after an affair?

Yes. This is some of the most common work I do. Some couples want to understand what happened and rebuild, others need space to process it properly, whether that is together or separately.

Do you work with separating couples?

Yes. Some couples come to work through problems together, others have already decided to separate and want space to do it well, sometimes called conscious uncoupling. This is not legal or financial advice. It is a space to say what needs saying and find some closure as things end.

Do you offer workplace mediation?

Yes. Alongside counselling, civil and workplace mediation is available for organisational conflict that does not need formal HR action.

Are you registered and insured?

Yes. I am a Registered Member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (MBACP 420184) and work to its Ethical Framework. I am fully insured and have regular clinical supervision.

Is what I say confidential?

Yes. What you say stays between us. There are a few limits, and they are rare. If you or someone else is at serious risk of harm, if a child or an adult at risk needs protecting, or if the law requires it, I may need to share information. I will talk to you first wherever I can. I discuss my work with a clinical supervisor, without using your name.

What if I am worried about my safety, or someone else’s?

Tell me, in a session or by phone or email. In an emergency call 999. My safeguarding policy is sent to every client and is available on request.

Can you make adjustments for me?

Yes. If you have access needs, or need any adjustment to how sessions run, tell me when you get in touch and I will do what I can. Online and telephone sessions are available.

What happens when you are away or unwell?

You will get as much notice as possible of planned breaks, usually at least four weeks. If I am ever unexpectedly unable to work, a trusted colleague who is bound by confidentiality will contact you.

Do you record sessions or use AI?

Sessions are never recorded. Nothing that could identify you is put into an AI tool. Online sessions use a secure video service built for healthcare. The privacy policy has the detail.

Is your practice inclusive?

Yes. Everyone is welcome, whatever your background, identity, relationship or beliefs. I do not offer or support conversion therapy in any form.

Is this a crisis service?

No. I am not available between sessions for urgent support. If you need help now, call 999, NHS 111 (mental health option) or Samaritans on 116 123.

What if I am unhappy with something?

Please tell me, I would much rather know. The complaints procedure is on this website, and you can contact BACP at any point.

You do not have to have the right words.

Just reach out. The initial consultation is free and there is no pressure beyond that first conversation. I will come back to you within one working day and everything stays between us.

Our Commitment

DeBell Counselling is committed to providing a professional, ethical, and high-quality service. If something goes wrong, or you are unhappy with any aspect of your counselling, we want to know. Raising a concern will not affect your therapy or your relationship with Debra Bell.

What You Can Raise a Concern About

You may raise a concern about any aspect of your experience with DeBell Counselling, including the conduct or behaviour of Debra Bell, how a session was handled, a breakdown in communication, administration, fees or invoicing, how your personal data has been handled, or any other aspect of the service.

Step One: Raise It Directly

In the first instance, please raise your concern directly with Debra Bell, in person during or after a session, by email at contact@debell.co.uk, or by phone on 07867 818018. Debra will acknowledge your concern within two working days and provide a full written response within ten working days.

Concerns about data protection should also be directed to Debra Bell in the first instance. If you are not satisfied, you may escalate to the ICO at www.ico.org.uk.

Step Two: Formal Written Complaint

If you are not satisfied, put your complaint in writing to contact@debell.co.uk, marked Formal Complaint. Include your name and contact details, a clear description of your concern and when it occurred, what you have already raised and how Debra responded, and what outcome you are looking for.

Debra will acknowledge your formal complaint within three working days. A full written response will be provided within 20 working days. If an extension is needed she will notify you in writing and give a revised timescale.

Step Three: Escalation to BACP

If you remain dissatisfied after completing Steps One and Two, you may refer your complaint to the BACP Professional Standards team. You do not need to complete Steps One and Two before contacting BACP if you believe there has been a serious breach of professional conduct.
